The UK is switching off its old copper phone network (PSTN and ISDN), and the industry plans to finish by 2027. Businesses should list every line and device that still uses copper and move each one to a digital service.

What is being switched off?

PSTN and ISDN are the copper lines that many office phones, alarms, lifts, and card machines still use. As the network moves to internet-based calling, these lines are being withdrawn. Anything still on copper will need a new connection.

What should you check now?

  • Which phone numbers and lines are still PSTN or ISDN
  • Which devices quietly use those lines, such as alarms, door entry, franking machines, and card terminals
  • Whether your calls already run through Microsoft Teams or another cloud phone system
  • What happens at each site if the internet connection goes down

How Cloud Guard helps

Questions we are asked

When is the PSTN switch-off?

The UK industry is planning to complete the switch-off by 2027. Some areas move earlier, so it is worth checking your lines now.

Will my phone number change?

Usually not. Most numbers can move to a digital service.

What about alarms and lifts?

These often use copper lines without anyone realising. We help you find them and plan a safe replacement.
